The modern mullet keeps length through the back, adds texture on top and cleans up the sides. It’s nothing like the ’80s version, and it’s one of the cuts we specialize in at Broken Arrow.
Short answer
A modern mullet is a men’s haircut with textured length on top, shorter or tapered sides, and length left through the back that’s blended into the rest of the cut. Broken Arrow Barbershop in Orem specializes in modern mullets and recommends the Signature Haircut for the scissor work it takes to blend it properly.
01
Modern vs ’80s mullet
The old mullet was short on top and long in the back, with a hard line between the two. The modern version is blended. Texture on top, a taper or fade on the sides, and length at the back that flows into the rest of the cut instead of hanging off it.
Blended, not business in front and party in back.
02
Why the blend is everything
A good modern mullet looks like one haircut. That means connecting the top, sides and back with scissors, taking weight out of the back so it moves, and placing the taper so the sides don’t puff out as they grow.
Rush it and you get the ’80s version.

Ways to wear it
- Taper mulletLow taper on the sides, softer and easier to grow out.
- Burst fade mulletFade curved around the ear, more contrast.
- Textured mulletChoppy texture on top and through the back.
- Curly mulletCurls kept long on top and at the back.
- Subtle mulletA little extra length at the back of a regular cut.

Who it suits
Thick, wavy and curly hair do especially well. If your hair is straight and fine, we’ll add texture so the back doesn’t go flat. If you’re growing your hair out, a modern mullet is an easy stage to wear along the way.

How to style it
A few sprays of sea salt spray on damp hair, a rough blow-dry or air-dry, then a little matte clay or cream through the top and back. Twist a few pieces at the back for texture.

What to book
Book the Signature Haircut. A modern mullet is mostly scissor work and blending, and the extra time is what keeps it looking modern.
