What a hair system actually is

September 26, 2026 · 7 min read

A hair system is a thin base with real hair attached, fitted to the area where you’ve lost hair and cut into your own hair so the two blend.

Short answer

A men’s hair system is non-surgical hair replacement: a thin, breathable base with human hair tied into it, attached to the scalp with tape or adhesive, color-matched and cut into your existing hair. It isn’t permanent. Systems are replaced every few months and maintained every few weeks.

01

The base

The base is the part that sits on your scalp. Most are thin lace, thin skin (a clear polymer), or a mix of both. Lace breathes well and gives a natural hairline. Skin bases are easier to clean and hold adhesive longer.

Your barber picks the base based on your hair loss, your lifestyle and how much maintenance you want to do.

02

The hair

Good systems use human hair. It’s matched to your color, texture, density and wave pattern, then cut so it blends into the hair you already have on the sides and back.

At Broken Arrow the system isn’t the finished product. The finished haircut is.

03

How it’s attached

The area is shaved or trimmed, then the system is attached with medical-grade tape, liquid adhesive, or both. It stays on while you shower, sleep, work out and swim.

It isn’t surgery and nothing is implanted. It can be removed at any time.

04

What the first year looks like

The first appointment is the fitting and install. After that you come in for maintenance every few weeks: the system is removed, cleaned, re-attached and cut. Most people replace the system itself a couple of times a year.

Some clients learn to do their own maintenance at home between visits, which keeps the cost down.

Who it’s for

Men with thinning hair, a receding hairline or larger areas of hair loss who want a full head of hair back without surgery. Age doesn’t matter much. What matters is how much hair you’ve lost and whether you’re willing to keep up with maintenance.

Questions

Is a hair system the same as a toupee?

It’s the modern version. Today’s systems are much thinner and are cut into your own hair, so they look like a normal haircut.

Can people tell?

When it’s color-matched and cut in properly, most people won’t notice.

How much does it cost?

It can be as little as $5.07 a day. Prices are on our Hair Replacement page. See prices →
