Haircuts for receding hairlines in Orem: how we choose the right shape

September 26, 2026 · 5 min read

A receding hairline doesn’t mean you’re out of options. The right shape can change how your hairline looks, and we see a lot of them in the chair.

Bryton likes this kind of work. Clients who haven’t liked their hair in a while because of a receding hairline are some of his favorite people to cut for.

Here’s how we decide what to cut, and why.

Short answer

For a receding hairline, we usually keep the sides shorter, add texture on top, bring the front slightly forward or keep it messy, and avoid hard lines at the temples. The exact shape depends on how far the hairline has receded, your density on top and how you style it. Book a Signature Haircut with Bryton at Broken Arrow in Orem.

01

How we choose the shape

  • How far it’s recededA slight recession at the temples needs a different cut than a hairline that’s moved back through the middle.
  • Density on topMore hair on top gives us more options. Thinner hair needs texture more than length.
  • Head and face shapeWhere the sides sit changes how wide the forehead looks.
  • How you style itA cut you can’t style yourself won’t hide anything by day three.

02

Cuts that usually work

  • Textured cropShort sides, choppy texture on top and a slightly forward fringe that softens the temples.
  • Short, messy topMovement breaks up the hairline so the eye doesn’t stop at the temples.
  • Low or mid taperKeeps the sides tight without the contrast of a high skin fade.
  • Buzz with a taperWhen the hairline has moved a long way, going shorter can look intentional instead of hidden.

What we avoid

Very high fades, sharp line-ups at the temples, a hard part and slicked-back styles. All of them draw a line straight to the area you’d rather not show.

The goal isn’t to hide the hairline. It’s to stop the eye landing on it.

04

How clients style it

A small amount of matte clay, worked through dry hair from the back to the front, then pushed slightly forward and roughed up with the fingertips. No shine, no comb lines.

We’ll show you how at the end of the cut so you can do it the same way at home.

When a haircut isn’t enough

A haircut can change how a receding hairline looks. It won’t bring hair back. If you want your hairline back, a non-surgical hair system can rebuild it, starting with a free consultation.
